Updating Key Results

Updates are how you record progress on your key results. Each update captures a value, a status (traffic light), a data date, and an optional comment. You can update key results from the Update tab in the OKR Manager or from the Update OKR progress page.

Where to update

There are two places to enter updates:

  1. Team Update tab: Navigate to your team's OKR page, select a cycle period, and switch to the Update tab. You'll see every key result in the cycle grouped by objective.
  2. Update OKR progress page: Open Update OKR progress from the sidebar. This page shows only the key results assigned to you across all your teams, so you can update everything in one place.

Both views use the same update card for each key result.

The update card

Each key result is displayed as a card with the following fields:

Value: Enter the new current value for the key result. The placeholder shows the last recorded value so you know where things stand.

Status: Choose a traffic-light status from the dropdown:

  • Not Started (gray): Work hasn't begun
  • On Track (green): Progressing as expected
  • Behind (yellow): Falling behind the target pace
  • Critical (red): Significantly off target and needs attention

Reporting date: The date this update applies to. Click the calendar button to pick a date. It defaults to the date of your most recent update. If your team has an update cadence configured, the current period label (e.g. "Week 10") appears next to the date.

Comment: Add optional context about your progress, blockers, or next steps. The comment field expands when you focus it.

Sum vs Diff mode

Next to the value input there is a toggle button:

  • Sum mode (Σ icon): Enter the new absolute total value (e.g. "75" means the key result is now at 75)
  • Diff mode (± icon): Enter the change since the last update (e.g. "+10" adds 10 to the previous value)

Click the toggle to switch between modes. The other field updates automatically so both stay in sync.

Saving an update

Click the Update button on the right side of the card to save. You can also press ⌘+Enter (Mac) or Ctrl+Enter while focused on any field in the card.

When you have unsaved changes the card background highlights to make pending updates easy to spot. After a successful save the button briefly shows Updated ✓ as confirmation, and the card returns to its default state.

Each key result is saved individually, so you don't need to save all updates at once.

Viewing update history

Below the input fields, each card has an info footer showing the current value, status pill, last updated date, and owner. Three action buttons let you dig deeper:

  • Chart icon: Toggles an inline progress graph and table showing all updates over time, grouped by your team's update cadence
  • Comments icon: Toggles an inline list of all past updates with their values, statuses, dates, and comments
  • Eye icon: Opens the Key Result detail sheet, a side panel with three tabs: Status (progress chart and summary), Updates (full history with the ability to delete individual updates), and Supporting (any supporting key results)

Update reminders

When your team has an update cadence set (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.), a reminder tag appears on each key result card. It shows how many days remain until the next update is due, for example "Update in 3 days", "Update today", or "Past due". This helps you stay on schedule without having to check a separate calendar.

Tips for updating key results

  • Update regularly: Frequent small updates are more useful than infrequent large ones
  • Use Diff mode for incremental metrics: If you're tracking things like revenue or sign-ups that accumulate, Diff mode lets you enter just the new amount
  • Set the status honestly: Traffic lights are most valuable when they reflect reality, not optimism
  • Add comments when the status changes: A brief note explaining why something moved from On Track to Behind gives your team lead actionable context
  • Use the data date: If you're recording data from a previous day or week, adjust the date so your progress graph stays accurate
