Every key result is backed by a metric, the measured series behind its progress. By default each key result gets its own private metric, but a key result can instead track a KPI from your organisation's KPI catalogue. Several key results, across teams and cycles, can track the same KPI.
Where KPIs live
The KPIs page in the sidebar lists every KPI you can see, as cards or a table with the latest value, when it was updated, the team, and the owner. Filter with Search KPIs or switch to Organisation only for organisation-wide KPIs. Each team also has a KPIs section in its workspace.
Create a KPI from either place with a Name, Unit (Number, Percent, or Currency), Team (or None for an organisation-wide KPI), an Owner, and the Allow manual updates switch. KPIs receive progress updates just like key results, but have no traffic light. The KPIs you own also appear on the KPIs tab of Update Progress.
Connecting a key result to a KPI
Open the key result's settings (the gear icon on the Create tab, or the Edit tab in the key result's status sheet). Under Measurement, choose Track an existing KPI and pick a KPI from the catalogue.
Once connected:
- The key result's type (Number, Percent, or Currency) follows the KPI and can no longer be changed on the key result.
- The target values, owner, weight, and milestones stay on the key result. They describe your goal on top of the KPI's series.
- The key result's progress and history show the KPI's measurements.
To stop tracking the KPI, choose Stop tracking this KPI in the same section. The key result gets its own metric back, including any history it had before you connected the KPI.
Converting a key result's metric into a KPI
If a key result's own metric deserves a life of its own, open the key result's settings and choose Convert to KPI. Give the KPI a name and pick the team (or organisation-wide, for Owners and Admins). The metric moves into the KPI catalogue with its full history, and the key result keeps tracking it.
Automatic updates
Both KPIs and key results with their own metric have an Allow manual updates setting. When it is off, values can only be written by API keys and integrations. People can still comment and change status, the update button reads Automatic, and the metric is left out of Update all and reminder emails.
Who can add updates?
Recording, changing, or removing measured values on a KPI requires write access to the KPI itself: its owner, members of its team, or organisation Owners and Admins.
If you own a key result that tracks a KPI managed by another team, you can still add comments and set the traffic light from the key result, but the value fields are hidden. The KPI's own team records the numbers.
